We often consider the ponds body of water as the main focal point, and yes in some cases that may well be, however its the accompanying landscape that draws the eye to the centrepiece. This is what we refer to as "aquascaping" - the formation of the ponds surrounding features. From cascading falls over carefully placed rocks to the forming of soil embankments for definition and character.
Rocks and gravelled stone go hand in hand with pond construction, giving the pond natural attributes associated with bringing a piece of nature into our gardens. The lakes, rivers and waterfalls we know across the UK have been carved out over millennia and have shaped the landscape around them, moving and sculpting rocks in their path forming stunning natural art. The geological diversity of the British Isles means we have a vast selection of stones and gravels to not only use within our projects but to provide the inspiration behind our works.
We have access to an array of local and nationwide natural rocks, supplied in sizes from the palm of your hand up to dramatic, huge statement boulders with varieties such as Chilmark Stone, Scottish Cobbles, Cornish Slate, Purbeck Stone, Green Granite, Charcoal Slate, Stalbridge Stone, Red Laguna, Burnt Cinder, Yorkstone, Green, Plum, Blue and Black Slate, Cambion Boulders, Angel Whirlpool... the list goes on!
Just as important as the eye catching natural rocks are the gravels that accompany them. Whether the use of gravel is to create a beached section to a pond or to simply fill the gaps between the larger rocks, its important that these smaller stones compliment the overall aquascaping effect. With every available choice of rock there is a gravel to match and its usually the exact same material, just alot smaller!
Gravels (sometimes referred to as chippings) are the loose aggregations of rock fragments formed through natural geological processes or produced commercially as crushed stone. Occurring naturally in riverbeds, lakes and the surrounding landscape. Varying in size, shape and texture - just like their big cousins mentioned above!
